Black Water - The Doobie Brothers

Hi Guys,

Just did a YouTube (YouChoob!) search on the Doobie Brothers and found a few gems.

Back when I was about 15 years old, my music teacher Rich Healey showed me how to play the chords to "Listen to the Music" and how to play the chords and the lead to "China Grove" which was very popular at the time. He had heard the Doobie Brothers play a dance at the College of San Mateo and commented that they had incredible vocals back then.

OK here we go...

Listen to the Music. With Tom Johnston back with the band. Nice to see him playing again. I had assumed that he was a casualty to the rock star lifestyle. Its great to see him playing with the band. TJ rips a nice lead at the end the song. The harmonies are so sweet. The guy who sings in the middle is Pat Simmons has an incredible voice. Tom wrote and sang many if not most of their best songs. (In my opinion) For a more accurate history of the band check out Wikipedia's entry for the Doobie Brothers

The original link ws taken down so I have replaced it with a video shot from the crowd in March 07. This video is from the sme tour. They start off the song as a funk groove in E and then break into the Chors "a capella" - gotta love it.

Here is a link to our version of the "Listen to the Music". Doesn't hold a candle to the Doobies!

Here is an old video (1973) of the Doobies lip synching to "Listen to the Music". Original members. (They had two drummers, I'm guessing that at least one of the drummers had a great voice.) Looks like it might be the same line up as the current video. Amazing!!! Their clothes were ridiculous!

China Grove - a song I would like to play in our band. This live, incredible back-up singing. Nice ooohs in the bridge and good ad lib on the solo. Complete with "smoke" and pyrotechnics at the end of the song. Gotta love it!

Takin' it to the Streets. At the time signified the changing of the guards. But these days the original members along with a few new players are doing as good as they have ever done it. Again the harmonies are sublime.

Black Water - Live! Currrent Line-up

Black Water - Pat Simmons, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on pedal steel, Michael McDonnald. Some interesting additions. Nice accapella with the crowd

Long Train Runnin - Current line-up. Its a great song. Nice sax solo and use of their horn secion. When your famous you can get a horn section to give you some serious punch when you are live.

If you made it this far, then you are a real Doobies fan!!

Cheers,

-john
